HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY IN INDIA.
The hospitality industry is a key member of the service sector and is linked directly to domestic and international tourism. According to the World Tourism Organization (WTO), tourism has become one of the most important economic, social, cultural and political phenomena of the twenty-first century. Hospitality comprises a wide range of services such as accommodations, food and beverage, events and activities etc. With the world becoming a global village, travel for pleasure and business has increased manifold and is expected to raise further in future making travel and tourism as the world's largest industry. This has resulted in increased demand for hospitality services worldwide that conform to internationally acceptable service standards. This has resulted in great demand for skilled manpower all over the globe.

Hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing, industries in India and abroad. Hospitality in India is the largest service industry, with a contribution of 6.23% to the national GDP and 8.78% of the total employment in India. Taj, Oberoi, Clarks, Hindustan were already booming in the Indian market. Impulse to Hotel and related Hospitality industry has been provided by the entrance of International hotel, food and catering majors, the likes of Hyatt, Starwood, Accor, IHG, Marriott's, Radisson, McDonalds, cafe coffee day, Barista, Dunkin doughnuts, Pizza Hut, just to name a few. With the arrival of International majors this has become a favored profession because of high salary and emoluments, exceptional growth opportunities and excellent working environment, opportunity to work abroad etc. A recent survey has projected Hospitality as one of the best possible careers for Indians.

However Hospitality Education in India has remained inadequate and incommensurate with the hospitality requirements of the private as well as public sector for many years now. There remains an acute shortage of qualified personnel. Also Hospitality being a dynamic and cosmopolitan industry requires state of the art know how and knowledge which needs to be constantly upgraded in league with International developments.
